Surfing is like the perfect potion. Add salt water, adrenalin to the desired amount, toss in some serotonin, breathtaking surroundings and there you go… the formula for happiness!
I call it my “healthy addiction” as being alone for an hour, in a beautiful place doing what I love most gives me the ultimate feeling of bliss. But what is the real cause of my happiness?
Well, the latest research suggests the actual culprit for this ‘high’ we are feeling is all thanks to ‘Negative Ions’ giving off an altered atmospheric state!
Ions are charged particles in the air. Some are charged negatively, and some charged positively. The ones we want are the odorless, tasteless and invisible negative ions that we are lapping up during every session. These negative ions, being charged by turbulent water are in fact triggering the most blissful chemical cocktail of endorphins and serotonin in our brains.
Listen, I’m very much a two feet solidly on the ground kind of gal so hearing about the ubiquous presence of something unseen left me feeling uneasy. But the science talks and research says this is the real thing!
It does make sense when I’m leaving the water stoked but no sooner am I pulling out from the car park do I want to make a Uturn back for more! The chemical explosion fades fast leaving you wanting your next high while your wetsuit is still mid way through drying out!
When you are paddling out in your next session this weekend, take a deep breath and thank those negative Ions that are making you stoked!
