When you get “that feeling”

image1-6There are two types of surfers in our oceans; those who pee in their wetsuit and those who lie about peeing in their wetsuits. Surfing is probably the only sport that allows you to pee in a public place with complete comfort and confidence.

All surfers can certainly agree that there is something about being in the ocean that makes you want to pee. Well the science speaks…Immersion diuresis is a biological phenomenon that gives us the urge when surfing! When your body goes into cold water the blood vessels constrict. This causes a rising blood pressure and the resultant sensation of needing to pee.

There are obviously Pro’s and Con’s to the do you or don’t you debate.

A moment of warmth during a session certainly saves you time not having to return to shore mid surf. It saves the effort of unpeelling a wet wetsuit and putting it back on again. You keep your spot in the line up and stay in your surfing rhythm giving you an extra couple of rides by not missing the set waves.

Wetsuits are designed to circulate the water that gets trapped inside the suit, so your wee is circulating too. If your suit comes with a built in hood you can smell your wee as its passing your ears and into your hair. If surfing a spot without beach showers, you tend to stink for the rest of the day. It probably damages the suit if done regularly and not rinsed out.

We all do it and its no big deal when in the surf, just don’t do it on the way down to the waters edge or back from a surf… and it should go without saying… stick to a number one’s only… okay!
